EMG / NCV (Electromyography / Nerve Conduction Velocity)

Understanding Pain? EMG/NCV Can Help!

EMG/NCV (Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Velocity) are tests used together to assess the health of your muscles and nerves. If you’re experiencing pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling, these tests can help your physiatrist pinpoint the source of the problem.

How it Works:

  • EMG: Measures the electrical activity of your muscles, both at rest and during contraction. Abnormal electrical activity might indicate muscle weakness, nerve damage, or a problem with the connection between nerves and muscles.
  • NCV: Evaluates the speed and quality of electrical signals traveling through your nerves. Slowed or weak signals can suggest nerve damage or compression.

Benefits of EMG/NCV:

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Helps identify a wide range of neuromuscular disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, radiculopathy, and muscular dystrophy.
  • Non-Invasive: No radiation involved, making it a safe and comfortable procedure.
  • Targeted Treatment: By pinpointing the cause of your symptoms, allows for personalized treatment plans to address the underlying issue.

EMG/NCV might be recommended if you experience:

  • Muscle weakness or wasting
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pain
  • Cramping
  • Difficulty moving

Don’t let pain hold you back! Our physiatrists can use EMG/NCV to diagnose the cause and recommend the most effective treatment options to help you get back to feeling your best.
